Has anyone had cancer in both kidneys?

I had a partial nephrectomy on my left kidney 5 years ago, and next month I'm due to have another on my right kidney. The one on my right kidney is not as straight forward this time, as the tumour is next to a major blood vessel, so the risk is greater for losing the whole kidney.

I already have health issues which require me to take a lot of medication, mainly pain relief, so either way I'm not sure of how my kidneys or kidney should I be left with one, will cope.

Is there anyone else in this position ?

  • Hi there, welcome to the forum, but sorry for the reason you're here. I can't comment on the challenges you're having because I don't have the same problem as you, although I did come close to having one kidney taken out. I had a tumor in the ureter tube and at first, the surgeon thought the cancer had gone to my kidney, but it hadn't, at least not at that point. I do have bladder cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer though. In any case, getting back to your situation, I would suggest you post in "Ask the Nurses" category, or you can call them from Mon. to Fri. during business hours and talk to them. They are really good to go over some of your issues with you, and although they can't do specifics because they don't have your medical history. they can suggest questions for you to ask your medical team.

In any case, come back on to the forum anytime and keep us up to date with your progress. We can offer emotional support and the forum gives an opportunity to express fears and frustrations that go hand in hand with a cancer diagnosis. Looking forward to hearing more from you as you take this journey that none of us would ever choose to be on.

    Take care.
