endometrial cancer

Can anyone tell me, if you have a hysterectomy because of endometrial cancer, do they remove your ovaries as well?

  • I had my womb, fallopian tubes, ovaries and cervix removed,  I think , though, you need to speak to your surgeon.  I believe they sometimes leave either one or both ovaries.  Mine was done for stage II. Womb cancer.

  • Pauline, I see you said,'I think' I didn't ask either, I just assumed that they'd taken the lot. My fault for not asking I suppose. But I think I was so shocked at the speed of what happened, 4 weeks from going to the g.p. to getting diagnosed and operated on, after never having had anything in the way of illness before, that I just didn't think to ask. I was alright for 9mths, then it came back in a lymph node, so I had chemo, which shrank it, then 35 radiotherapy treatments. I thought it was gone, but am now feeling 'unwell' again. I looked on my blood test form, and the test is for ovarian cancer! I'm so cross, I don't understand why. Sorry to unload onto you, but I think they should volunteer a little more, don't you? Went for the blood test today, so when I go back to see the consultant on the 13th, I shall certainly be asking this time. They didn't even tell me what they are testing for. I think I need to 'man up' a bit.

  • Hi Katherine1, I was diagnosed with cancer of the womb and operated on very quickly.  I didn't think to ask but had a wonderful consultant who discussed my options as at the time was only 22.  He had planned to leave my ovaries...but informed me that if he was at all concerned I would need a total hysterectomy, womb, fallopian tubes ovaries cervix and had to sign to say that I understood and consented to this.  In my case my ovaries were not in good shape and it resulted in the latter.  But I was lucky not to need further treatment just check ups and HRT.  Please talk to your consultant to find out your options. xxx

  • Katharine, mine was also done within 4 weeks.  At my 3 month check up cancer had come back in my pelvic area, peritoneal cancer, cancer cells around my bowel and enlarged lymph nodes.  Until my op I had been fit and well with just a bit of bleeding that had been going on for four years. I wish now I had just left it because I am told they can no longer do anything for me.

  • Thank you for that, I will be asking questions this time. I wish they had taken the lot. I was 61 when I was diagnosed, went through the menopause, so I really didn't need it.xx

  • Why are you even allowed on here? I hopethis is monitored.

  • Bless you, it is so easy to forget all the questions you think of later, I often think could things have been done differently for a different outcome, but then realise just how lucky I have been.  My cancer was found by accident as a result of having a d&c to remove a polyp.  I am glad now aged 41 that everything was removed, HRThas been working well (touch wood).  Are you due to have a total hysterectomy?x

  • Hi, Kathariine, I was diagnosed last August 2014 and was operated on in Septe ber.    I am now taking Letrazole, a hormone tablet, for 4weeks to see if it works (it has stopped me bleeding).  Am going back for scans next week and the week after to see the oncologist.

I wonder why they didnt take your ovaries at the time.  There was nothing wrong with mine but they took them anyway.    I can understand your anger, I would feel the same.  Please be positive, though,if they have caught it early you should have a good outcome.

Wishi g you all the very best, Katharine, let us know how you get on, please.

  • Hello Katherine
