Mastectomy due on Friday 13th...

In July 2013 I had a breast reduction operation.  In July 2014 I was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer.  I was put on chemotherapy fec-t but only had 4 sessions because it wasn't having much effect.  Since then I have been on Letrozole, hormone tablet, which has, apparently worked.  On Friday 13th I'm due for mastectomy surgery and up till now have felt fine, able to cope and generally upbeat.  Facing surgery so soon (I've had 2 week's notice) has made me very emotional.

How will I feel about being bereft of one breast?  How will I feel about the scarring?  I'd love to hear how others have coped.

  • hi, i had invasive lobular canc er 3 years ago, i had to have a mastectomy with all lymph nodes removed,i like you felt sooo many emotions about the op, particularly what will i look like after the op. i had reconstruction so i had a skin expander fitted initially. when i woke i was surprised to see how good both breasts looked, i had the other reduced. yes it was painful at first but plaese do your phsio excercise, i carnt stress that enough.the implant is fantastic now the scaring is minimul, use bio oil to help scaring heal.good luck with your op. trisha xx

  • Hi Trisha

I'm 66 so don't think I'll bother with reconstruction.  Had I not had the reduction a couple of years ago I could have had the remaining one reduced for nothing...  I think I'm just concerned about waking up and finding a great scar instead of a boob.  Still, will have to get used to it.  Bio oil sounds good, I'd forgotten that, I used it before.  Glad you're pleased with your results.
