Stage 4 lung cancer, really need hope and insight

My father was diagnosed with stage 4, non small cell lung cancer in March 2014. He was 56 years old. I'm his only daughter and extremely close to him. He responded to chemo really well, and his tumour had reduced by 30% and was stable. About two months ago, he developed serious pains to his back and stomach, everyone thought it was due to a viral fever that was going around. Recently, they discovered the mets to the bones and stomach. They want to try taxol (chemo) as the previous maintenance doses stopped working and radiation was ineffective too. My father has been so active for the last year, travelled abroad twice for work and pleasure, and loves life. The last few weeks have been terrible. He's too weak to walk and is breathless. The oncologist says taxol is our last shot, but is prescribing small doses of it because of his weakness. Everything seems hopeless and dismal. He tested negative for the efgr gene so tarceva is out of the question. I need to hear your stories of survival or of treatment for his particular condition and aggressive progression. I need hope. Love, S
