bowel cancer

hi.i was diagnosed with bowel cancer in august 2014,advanced to liver ,i am now on my 8th lot of chemo and consultants are happy with my chemo, cancer count started at 790 and now i am down to 18,i have been warned in march when they do ct scan that my liver will not be repaired and have been told i will be looking at around 2years .when first told i was gutted and my partner broke down, telling my family and adult children was the hardest thing i have ever done ,but we have come to terms now and are very strong.we got marred 3 weeks ago ,we were getting married next year but with this we wanted in to be brought forward, the mcmillain nurses are great and i find when in chemo talking to others is a great weight off your mind,i hope that staying positive and hoping the next course of treatment after my chemo finishes extends my life abit more, they are looking into radiotherpy next or a stem injection which is done at guys hospital once amonth ,but have to have test first ,so i have introduced myself now and i wish u all well and i will reply to all and give advise if i can

  • GMorning Dave = nice too meet you and sorry to hear of whats going on in your life. Congrats to you and your wife on your wedding.

I must say I do admire your bravery and I think its wonderful how you hold yourself out to help others. In a funny sort of way the chemo is quite hard isn't it? It is so toxic = my wife had rectal eighteen months ago and had chemo last summer - she found it really nocked her for six!!

In these tragic conditions it is hard to stay positive I well know = and its the way in what is a natural process if not a dreadful proces.

I sincerely wish you and your wife the best and look forwards to hearing from you some time

    cheers steven

  • Hi Dave, thanks for introducing yourself. :) Congratulations on your recent wedding :) It's good to read that your consultants are pleased with how your chemo is going - how are you coping with it on a physical level? (I only managed 3 rounds before I showed an intolerance and any chemo is now no longer an option for me.) My 'treatment' plan now involves scans and surgeries as and when required - thankfully, I've got a fantastic team who have said they'll continue to offer surgery for as long as it's viable. I can relate to a lot of what you've written in your post - I started with bowel cancer which progressed to my liver and now, my lungs, but like you, I'm sure a positive attitude (and strong, supportive relationships with family and friends) gets us through the darker times of this awful disease. This forum has been a great place for me to come and offload to my virtual buddies, often more easily than to those closest to me. I hope you find it equally as supportive - and also a place where you can share your experiences to help support others too. Hope the rest of your chemo continues to go well - how many more sessions have you got to go? Keep us posted as to how you're getting on and take care of yourself, hugs to you, Jo xx
  • hi jo,

well my chemo was every 2weeks but now my liver count is to high so its being put to every 3 weeks ,my toxic levels do go high but come down every 2 weeks so they are addressing that now,had operation on bowels and i have a bag now which is annoying sometimes but i cant get blocked anymore ,i am hoping that when my chemo finishes they will cut wots left of turmour in bowels out but we will see,i was alarmed at first with my chemo being stopped but once they explained i was fine ,had atra scan 2 days ago on my liver ,and it looked abit odd but they explained the stars i could see was turmours and the shadows were wot the chemo is doing,i wish u well jo and if u need to chat just leave a message xx

  • Hi Jackal,

Thanks for the update on how your chemo is going. It's good that your team are giving you longer between sessions so that you can recover before the next round. Glad you're coping with your bag too.

I know what you mean about scans looking odd - I always think they look like something out of a science fiction film and in the past I've thought I've got all sorts going on, and it turns out to be to be normal tissue!

If you want to keep in touch and let us know how things are going and when your next surgery is, please do.

Take care of yourself, Jo xx
