U3 biopsy...and referred to clinical meeting...what can this mean. ..?

What could a U3 biopsy result mean and what could happen next?I had a mammogram about 2 weeks ago to investigate a small lump which turned out to be a cyst..However during an ultrasound the radiologist found a small shadow elsewhere in the breast and took a core biopsy. On Friday I went back to the clinic and they told me that the biopsy results had shown abnormal breast cells and instead of discharging me they are referring my case to their clinical meeting to discuss the next course of action. .. which takes place next week . At the moment thry are classifying the results as u3...but im just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and im wondering what this could mean and what may happen next?

  • Hello,

I belong to the nurse enquiry team and Lucie one of our moderators asked us if we might be able to shed any light on what is happening.

I am sorry to read about what¿s been going on. I can understand you wanting to know what the next steps might be.

As far I know the letter `U¿ stands for ultrasound and the number 3 means that it isn¿t clear from the scan results what this small shadow is. There is a way of classifying breast ultrasound scan results from 1 to 5, with 1 looking normal/ benign (non-cancerous) and 5 looking like cancer.

There is also a numeric classification for biopsy results which uses the letters `C¿ or `B¿ depending on the type of biopsy that has been taken and again the numbers 1-5. This is explained on the website of another charity, Breast Cancer Care, at this link.

I am really not sure what will happen next. If the biopsy results are indeterminate I suppose there is the possibility that they might want to take another tissue sample for further analysis, but I think there is no way of knowing what the specialist team will decide until they review you case.

I hope you don¿t have too long to wait before you find out.  It¿s easy to say I know, but try not to worry in the meantime.  If you want to give us a call to talk anything over our number is  0808 800 4040 and we are here from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Take care,

    Julia
