Hand and Foot Syndrome - Capecitabine and something 'not very nice' that happened yesterday

Hi All ...... The Capecitabine chemo drug I am on is causing me H&F syndrome. My feet feel like they are burning and are swelling underneath on the 'padded' areas. I havent meantioned it to my consultant at this point as it is manageable and I do not want him taking me off the drug because of the risk to me of cancer recurrence.  I have ony just completed my first two cycles of eight. Has anyone else had this difficulty? or  have any tips on creams etc which will help keep it at bay?     . Many thanks         Max x

  • I wonder if you could have an ultrasound before Jan to save you worrying all over Xmas and new year? I believe the risks are lower than with a repeat CT.  I'm sure you could if you paid for it if you are able to (I think it would be around £500 but am not certain).

Also please remember that you may be able to have ablations to liver tumours to prolong prognosis.

I empathise with how stressful and full of highs and lows this disease is LTS and wish there was something we could do to just take it all away and have a  normal life back.  The only positive thing is that we have others here on the site who understand, so keep posting whenever you need.

The udder cream is really good haha! Xx

  • Thanks, Max56.  I am following things up as I am not entirely comfortable with waiting so long without doing anything if these are new liver lesions.  I could totally understand it if I had no history of cancer or liver lesions but I clearly do so I don't know why I am being left in limbo, particularly over Xmas/New Year.  I totally understand that the docs don't want to use a second line of chemo unnecessarily but even my consultant herself said that there was every chance that these were new liver lesions.  Since getting my results, I have felt tired, stressed and nauseous - probably in the mind!  I am sort of person who feels much better if I am actively doing something to tackle things - I would rather that than leave the cancer to grow while nothing is being done.  I know the docs have the knowledge and I don't but ultimately, It is me that will have to deal with the consequences in the long term if the wrong decision is made here.

  • Hi ladies and Brian.  I dont come on here as much and I have been scrolling down to find out how you all were. I started off reading Max's post sadly and ended up laughing. You could say that it moooooved me to tears of laughter.  I'm so glad you are all coping ok. Love Debbie xx

  • Hi LTD ..... I think I would feel the same way as you.  As your consultant seemed to be concerned maybe you could ask her Secretary to get her to ring you and just talk through it again. Please let us know how you get on x

Hi Debs .... good to hear from you. Hope you are doing ok x

  • Well, the creaming sessions on Capecitibane have begun!  Started this lovely drug cocktail over a week ago.  No red hands or feet yet but I'm taking no chances and the Udderly Smooth Cream was promptly purchased!  Obviously hate being back on chemo but hope this drug will work for a good while.  Feeling a bit tired with a bit of a dicky tummy but it is hopefully doable. Finding fried food like chips makes my nausea worse.  Missing swimming but I have managed to walk at a reasonable speed on the treadmill at the gym.   Went walking in the fresh air yesterday but boy, it was friesian (oops, sorry,) freezing!

  •

Hi LTS ...... see you have started Cra**ycetabine - it worked really well for me but had very different side effects from the other drugs.  As you can see - the hooves went red and a bit swollen, plus cracked heels etc. A vitamin B supplement really helped too and was advised by my chemo nurse at the time - so maybe worth checking out with yours.  You are no doubt very sensible to start these preventative measures now rather than when they have happened.

    Good luck honey x

  • Hi Nessemo

Many years ago I worked on a dairy farm in New Zealand, we started using Japanese Peppermint udder cream for dry cracked and sore teats on the cows, a side effect of using this cream was that my dry cracked hands were in good condition within a fortnight. I saw this for sale recently when I went to buy parts at an agricultural supplier, it was £12 for a 500ml tube. It is far better than ordinary udder cream and a little goes a long way. Kim

  • Thankyou Kim

I will look into that.My dad was a dairy farmers for 45 years I wonder how I don't know about this?

Maybe dad can help me find it.

    Take care Ness xerox

  • Hi Kim,  think the contents of my bathroom cabinet just got bigger!  The things you learn on this forum!
