just finished 5 days in isolation with Neutropenic sepsis

Hi,

I new to the group and just wanted to know if anyone else has gone through this and how they coped.  My son and his girlfriend are on their way here (i'm now home) to see me but she is

developing a sore throat and I just had a panic and said maybe they should not come. So now she is going to stay outside in the car while my son has a visit but he's been in the car with

her for the past 4 hours so I thought maybe they both should stay away - I am I going over the top?  They will be here in an hour.  Any one got a suggestion?

  • Sorry not very clear when I re read this.  Looking to talk to anyone who has gone through neutropenic sepsis and the stuff about the visit is totally separate statement

  • Hi macbead and welcome,

Not exactly sure what neutropenic sepsis is, but have looked it up and it appears it a type of chemo? When I was on chemo I was advised to steer clear of even colds and flu because they can lead to raised temperatures which are not easy to deal with when your immune system is low and can cause problems. It's a difficult question to answer really but if you are in any doubt at all, maybe it would be best to reschedule.

I am by no means an expert but I think you have to listen to your own advice sometimes. Hopefully someone else will read your message in time and be able to advise too.

    Good luck macbead,

    Miras

  • DEar Miras,

Thanks for your reply. I am on chemo for secondary cancer. I had cervical cancer in 2009 and was pronounced cured but it returned in my pelvis and some lymph nodes. Neutropenia has to do with a dramatic drop in white blood cell counts and mine went down to .4 though no one told me exactly what is should be.  Any way it resulted in 5 days in hospital and now I am worrying about every little cough and sneeze.

My daughter just took it in hand and told her brother not to come and he totally understood and said they should have called off earlier but wanted to see me.  We just had a tearful conversation and thank goodness the trip here was a stop off on a weekend in Devon on the way back to London.

    Thanks for your thoughts

  • Hi Macbead

Good on your daughter, saved you having to make the decision. If we learn nothing else, we learn to take good care of ourselves, don't we?

Good luck with all your treatments.

  • Hi, sorry to hear you've had such a rough time recently.  My daughter had two years of Chemo and had blood test weekly to check when she became  Neutropenic the chemo would then stop while the bloods recovered.  Then more chemo until the white count became neutropenic again.  Like yourself we spent many a time in a side room hooked up to IV anti- biotic.  We were told by the hospital take care with hygiene, to stay away from soft cooked eggs, or uncooked egg ( as in Choc Mouse)unpasteurized milk.  Crowded supermarkets (people always food shop even when sick).  How ever not too worry too much with day to day bugs, ovoid if you feel happier but unfortunately many of the bacteria are already in our bodies and when we have no good white cells to fight infection it takes hold.  Not very cheery news, a juggling act between being tough on killing the cancer and keeping the infections at bay.  Keep an eye on your temp the 1st indication of infection.  We were told to contact the hospital if a temp of 37.5 twice or over 38.0 once to get anti-biotics.

I can feel for your panic and this  ***** cancer seems to take over your life I hope all goes well for you from now on,  take care, gardenlady.

Bye the way my daoughter if 12 years in re-mission. very scary getting there though.

  • Hi Macbead

I too ended up in hospital with neutropenic sepsis for 5 days on I-V antibiotics after my 1st chemo .  I had every test under the sun to try and find the cause of  the infection , but was told by my consultants that it's the bacteria in our own bodies that can sometimes be the cause . I now have a pegfilgrastim injection given with my chemo and i give myself an injection the day after chemo , this is to try an prevent the the white blood cells dropping too much . I also now stay away from any of my friends and family that have colds or coughs . it is very hard because we need our friends and family around us at this very difficult time , but hopefully they all understand . hopefully as summer is just round the corner there will be less colds around and we can get through the rest of our treatments without any more problems

    take care

    yvette
