Breast cancer diagnosis - double mastectomy in 6 weeks time. Was full of fight and feeling strong when first diagnosed but now I'm feeling scared and exhausted

I was diagnosed with invasive ductal breast cancer 2 weeks ago. Er + HER2- and spread to one lymph node.  I am booked for double mastectomy in 6 weeks time but since my diagnosis it’s gone all flat.  I was being strong at first. It was fresh, new, scary but felt I had fight.  Today I feel numb like the initial diagnosis wore off and now it’s real.  I’m moody, flat and exhausted and scared about it spreading or life after surgery and what happens next. All the waiting is draining

  • A very warm welcome to the Cancer Chat forum Ghe3104, although I'm sorry to hear you were recently diagnosed with invasive ductal breast cancer.

It's completely understandable, and natural, to have a lot of mixed and complex feelings at the moment and I hope this information we have about how cancer can make you feel will reassure you that you're o.k, and help you find a way to manage your emotions.

So many of our members know how tough this journey can be, so you are not alone Ghe3104, and hopefully some of them will offer their support and advice to you soon.

You can find out more about having a mastectomy on our website but if it would help to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040. The helpline is open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and our nurses will do all they can to support you and address any other questions or concerns you may have at this time.
