Requesting Changing consultant in the NHS

Has anyone made a request to change consultants in the NHS.

My recent consultant has resigned from her post and in doing so has passed me back to my prior oncology consultant to manage my future treatment.

At the recent consultation he declared he had no tools for any treatment plan.

Can I request to change consultants for another who has is more aligned with my previous consultant.

  • Hello Bayconnie and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry to hear about your consultant's resignation and that the one you've been passed back to is unable to offer you any treatment. This must be very frustrating.

You can find out more about getting a second opinion on our website but if you'd like to speak to one of our cancer nurses about this, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to give you the information you need about changing consultants.

Hopefully some of our members who have managed to change consultants when having their cancer treatment will be along soon to share their experiences and advice.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Steph

    Many thanks for the response.

Yes I have the option of getting a second opinion out-with the NHS (I have private health insurance) but I had such a good experience with my previous NHS consultants team I am very keen to return back to that hospital which is within the same NHS trust, who have already declared they have many tools at their disposal to try and help me . I feel to remain with this consultant will limit my options, treatment and live expectancy (I have a rare and fast growing cancer so very aware of all the risks) and I have already lost his trust with the this very narrow approach that was not up for discussion in any format.

I am currently gathering my thoughts together before writing and requesting a move out of his care, which is sans and  monitoring only.

It is a difficult situation as he was my original consultant, who perscribed the first course of chemo that did not work (the tumour doubled in size as a result). I suspect this, due to his mannerism, maybe be linked to the reason he does not want to fail again and thus is going forward with a 'no tools within his toolbox' policy.

Any advice and similar experiences would be much appreciated.

    Kind regards
