Delayed testing for non small cell carcinoma. 5 weeks for appointment, another 4 for results. 9 weeks feels like a scary time. Any advice?

My husband has a lump on his neck (lymph node) which after a fine needle biopsy has shown non-small cell carcinoma.  MRI and PET CT are clear and so he needs a core biopsy.  The appointment is in 5 weeks due to staff sickness and then 4 weeks for results.  9 weeks feels like a scary time for more information and worried that the delay will impact the effectiveness and start of treatment.  He then may need a tonsil biopsy which could take another 8 weeks before results.  These times are scary.  Any advice?

  • Hello Jbd73

I'm sorry to hear that your husband has recently been told that he has non-small cell carcinoma following a fine needle biopsy. I can understand that this must be a really worrying time for you, particularly while he's having to wait for additional tests and results.

We do know that for many people, this period of waiting can be a really anxious time. We have some tips and advice about how to cope with waiting for news that you may find helpful but I also wanted to let you know that you're most welcome to give our nurses a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. If you'd like to chat with them, they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I also wanted to say that it's important you raise your concerns about the potential delay of starting treatment with the hospital team. Do talk with his Consultant or specialist nurse about your concerns. Hopefully they will be able to offer some reassurance.

Keep in touch JBD73 and let us know how things progress. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,
