Oestrogen receptive breast cancer - due to have sentinel node removal and worried about taking hormone therapy such as Tamoxifen

I'm due to have sentinel node removal after a cancer was found & removed in my left breast & I'm 70 this year.

The cancer was oestrogen receptive but I really am not keen on taking hormone therapy such as Tamoxifen -- the side effects sound awful including bone thinning, aching joints, tummy problems & increased risk of blood clots. As I already have severe osteoarthritis I am really worried about the medication.

  • Hi Deborah.abc and welcome to Cancer Chat.

Our community knows how daunting hormone therapy can be, especially with the range of side effects that can occur but if you can, try to keep in mind that everyone reacts differently to medication and you may find you are one of the lucky ones that has little to no side effects. I know this doesn't make the prospect of taking tamoxifen any less scary, but hopefully hearing about some of our member's experiences will help you feel more at ease about taking this medication.

You can find out more about tamoxifen and the sentinel node removal you're due to have on our website but if it would help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to address your concerns and answer any other questions you may have at this time.

We're sending you all our support Deborah.abc and wishing you all the best with the next stage of your journey.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
