Angry and overwhelmed

Hi in the past two months my life has been a roller coaster and not in a good way. I have had back pain for two years. In October 2025 I had Xrays and fractures were found on my spine and ribs. After being admitted to hospital mass's were found on my lung, liver and back.  I was told that the mass on my lung was seen in a scan for a unrelated issue in 2023 but nothing was done. I'm angry. Since October 2025 I've had numerous tests.. I'm waiting for the results of my lung biopsy and today I'm having radiation treatment on my back. I'm totally overwhelmed and have good days and bad when the depression takes over. My life has changed from being an active independent 73year old to a tired anxious woman who questions what the future holds for me. I know 'what ifs' aren't helpful but I question whether my situation today would be different if action was taken in 2023.

  • Hello Polly52

I'm so very sorry to hear that you've been given the news you've been given since your hospital admission. I think it's very understandable that you're experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions particulary with the news that a mass was seen in 2023 but nothing was done at the time.

Hopefully the radiotherapy treatment that you've had this week will bring some stability and pain relief to your back before too long and the specialists will be able to talk with you about options for managing your care going forward.

If you think it might help to have someone to talk with about how you're feeling then you can ask if there is a cancer pyschologist that the team can refer you to. Or it may be that there is an organisation such as Maggie's in your local area. If you think it might help to talk with one of our team of nurses for some support you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and information they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope over the coming days you'll get some answers Polly52 and that you will have good support from family, friends and the health professionals here on in. Keep in touch if it helps to have a safe space to put things down in writing - we're here for you.

    Best wishes,
