Inflammatory breast cancer - know your options

I was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer a year ago.  I declined a non skin sparing masectomy offered at my local hospital with a years wait for reconstruction which could only be diep flap, which I was told by the IBC Facebook group was my only option, something which I believe was dangerous misleading advice.  Since I declined I was referred to another hospital who offered me a masectomy followed by immediate reconstruction either implant or diep flap, or to just remove the tumour, there were four types of surgery options.  I wasn't happy with this and wanted to know if the chemo had worked, I was then offered biopsies, something hospitals don't usually do as they assume women are going to take them up on masectomy.  The biopsy found no active cancer cells in my tumour.  I declined masectomy and was offered phesgo, I have been on phesgo for a year, my latest CT scan shows no visible tumour and no visible cancer.  We need to make sure that people are given all the relevant information in order to make informed choices, people should not be pushed into taking what they falsely are led to believe is the only option by the NHS or by supposed support groups.  It is clear I am not the only one judging by this article, that was misled.  www.bbc.co.uk/.../ced6dx0xewno

  • Hello samroz3,

Thank you for sharing your story on here and you make some very interesting points. I think you are spot on, that cancer patients need to be given all the relevant information in order to make informed choices and it is important for everyone to know what their options are. And you're right to be vigilant when it comes to advice given online or on Facebook groups as there is sadly a lot of misinformation out there.

I hope that you are doing well a year on from your diagnosis.

    Best wishes,
