Cancer treatments in the elderly

When Multi Disciplinary  Meetings DMT take place in the case of the elderly with cancer is there a geriatrician present that knows the patient? In my opinion it is vital that a geriatrician is present.

  • Hello BC2025

A cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting is a regular meeting where a group of different healthcare specialists meet to review a patient's cancer case and decide on the best treatment plan. The team typically includes specialists like oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, and specialist cancer nurses.

I would think it's unusual for a Specialist Geriatrician to be included in regular cancer MDTs, although if a patient is known to a specialist not regularly involved in the meetings, it might be possible that the cancer specialists seek an opinion from them.

If there is something you'd like to talk through with one of our nurses for some advice and support, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
