Weight loss - some days I don't have much of an appetite. Can anyone recommend any foods that are easy to eat and can help me put on weight?

I have stage 4 kidney cancer (left kidney), with the cancer having spread to my lungs and lymph nodes.  Nearing the end of my immunotherapy treatment (pembrolizumab), but will continue on my anti cancer tablets (axitinib).

Been lucky that I've responded to treatment and I'm stable currently.

Had considerable weight loss at start of cancer journey (2 years ago), but have been losing a bit of weight again since April. I blame the daily tablets. Appetite is not good some days.

Anyone got any tips on foods they have found easy to eat and any foods they have added to there diet to help them put on a bit of weight - i try to have a healthy diet?

  • Hi Douglas05,

You need to ask your consultant or cancer nurse to refer you to the hospital dietician or ask your GP to refer you to the Community dietician. They can discuss why you are losing weight & provide you with information and a diet sheet that will help. They may also prescribe you food supplement drinks (Fortisip or Ensure) which provide 300 calories in each drink. Meanwhile, if your appetite isn't good, try eating small & often - 6 small meals or snacks daily. Use full fat milk in hot drinks and on cereal, use cream in porridge, honey on porridge & on crumpets. Although a cancer patient, my 4 stone weight loss was due to pancreatitis after a failed ERCP. I had no appetite for 6 months so was living on Fortisip & Fortijuice drinks and malt loaf!

I hope you get a referral quickly & your appetite & weight loss start to recover.
