Genetic testing - decisions around treatment

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in early September. I have a strong family history and my mum and cousin have the BRCA2 gene. Understandably my consultant is keen to operate and get things moving but I want to explore risk reducing surgery as an alternative. However waiting lists for genetic testing are long and the turnaround for results is 4-6 weeks. I don’t want to undergo multiple surgeries unnecessarily but the wait also worries me! Help!

  • Hello Bluedime82,

I'm sorry to learn about your diagnosis and can understand it's difficult to decide the treatment that you'd like.

The best thing to do is to discuss scenarios with you doctor, if you haven't already. They'll be best to advise on what is possible for you and are there to make sure you are informed and prepared at every step. If you'd like to discuss anything around treatment options with a cancer nurse, you can contact the team on our free anonymous helpline on 0808 800 4040. Lines are open from 9 to 5 Monday to Friday. You can also read more on treatment for breast cancer and the possible options on our website.

I do hope this is helpful and all the best to you,
