Earache five years after treatment

Hi

I finished treatment for throat cancer five years ago. It was a 36 session course of proton beam therapy to the left side of my neck. I had no earache at all in that five years up to February this year when I started with earache which has got gradually worse and is now excruciating. i’m taking paracetamol and one ibuprofen a day but this is not enough now to control the pain. I’ve tried Co-Codamol and this doesn’t work. I’m awake every night with it and it’s wearing me down and making me very depressed. I can’t believe that I’ve got this five years later but nobody seems to be particularly bothered. I’ve seen so many doctors about it and nobody can tell me whether this will ever stop or if I will have it for all my life, which I don’t think I could cope with. Has anybody else had these late effects from radiotherapy or am I the only one on this planet to get this earache?

  • Hi GwenJS,

A very warm welcome to our forum,

I am so sorry to hear that you are still having trouble with earache, despite having seen so many doctors. I am not a doctor, but I understand that this could be a late effect of your Proton Beam Therapy. Have you seen an audiologist with this problem? If not, I would suggest that you might benefit from a referral to see one. I'm not surprised that this is getting you down and I do hope that you find a solution.

Please keep in touch and let us know. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Jolamine

thank you very much for your reply. I’m going to try and see my GP tomorrow and I will ask about an audiologist.

I’ve only just discovered this forum and it’s helpful to read some of the posts.

I will keep in touch if that’s ok?

    kind regards

    Gwen
