Late effects of breast cancer five years on

I am 72 and had breast cancer surgery five years ago. Lumpectomy and wide local excision. My five year check up was completely clear. Unfortunately I got a new unrelated womb cancer which is incurable. Tumour in my pelvic bones is being held pain free following radiotherapy and I’ve started immunotherapy. All doing well but out of the blue I am getting sharp stabbing pains in my breast and arm all along the site of my surgery. It could be scar tissue or other things but it is absolutely agonising. I am on high doses of oxycodone and Pregabalin for the current cancer. I can’t take ibuprofen due to being on blood thinners. One doctor at the immunotherapy ward gave me some lidocaine patches. They work brilliantly on the site where I place them, but when I have to remove them of a 12 hour break the pain slowly returns as bad as ever I am at my wits end as I mobilise with crutches and I can’t bear to push down on them to move or get up from a seat. Is it muscle pain or nerve pain, my cancer nurse asks. I don’t know. I just need help. Why would this pain suddenly appear five years on, when I am dealing with my current cancer so well. I feel defeated.

  • Hi FionaMR,

I am so sorry to hear you are experiencing these sharp pains all of a sudden all along the site of your surgery. It is good news though that your five year check was completely clear though I am sorry you are having to deal with a new unrelated womb cancer. It's really difficult to know why this pain suddenly appeared and I hope that you find the right type of pain relief. It sounds like the lidocaine patches are working well on the site of the pain but I wonder if there is something else you could take for when you are not able to take the patches during that 12 hour break. We have detailed information on our website on the types of painkillers and this is something you should definitely discuss with your medical team so that they find what works most effectively for you.

It sounds like your cancer nurse is unsure as to what kind of pain it is and what might be causing it or where it is originating and you really need some answers there. I think it might be a good idea to try and get in touch with your doctor and see whether they can make sure you speak to the right specialist and can get some clarity on this.

Our cancer nurses are also available if you would like to talk things through with them - you can reach them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Hopefully you will hear from the experiences of others here on the forum who have been in a similar place as it helps sometimes to talk to someone who understands what you are currently going through.

I hope they find a solution to this pain and that you will soon be pain free again.

    Best wishes,
