Seroma, mastectomy in march and constant build up of fluid

I had mastectomy March this year

Wound healed, and scar healed but now I seem to have constant build up of fluid

It has been drained at least half dozen times, and last time about month ago+ nurse drained off a lot of fluid

Now it has gone hard again and uncomfortable like before

Was told it would drain naturally, but body doesn’t seem to be doing that

What should I do

  • Hello Tigressanne

I'm sorry to hear that, following your mastectomy in March, you've been having ongoing problems with a seroma. It's understandable that this may have been an uncomfortable and frustrating part of the healing process for you.

I know that we've had ladies here on the forum previously who have had issues with seroma that takes a long time to be absorbed into the body or who have had to have it drained multiple times by the breast care team, so please don't feel that you're alone in dealing with this problem. It's certainly worth keeping in touch with your breast care nurse to let them know that you're still experiencing issues since the last seroma drain. It may be that they give you some advice and decide to let things continue a little longer to see if the fluid is reabsorbed or it may be that they ask you to come back to the clinic sooner. Give them a call when you're able to.

I do hope that the breast care team are able to help get this problem resolved for you so that you're not in as much discomfort. Let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
