lung removal or chemo/radiotherapy ?

HI, I have lung cancer (spanning 2 lobes) and at the moment seem to have 2 options.

pneumonectomy (lung removal)  or chemo and radiotherapy

the lung removal would probably remove the cancer altogether (but as with Aldi middle aisle, once it gone, its gone)

chemo and radiotherapy MAY reduce the cancer but will probably not remove it.

there are no guarantees with either option, but i need to decide ???

  • Hello lest,

I am sorry to hear about your lung cancer diagnosis. Such a difficult decision you are having to make between going for a pneumonectomy or having chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Our website has a detailed section on lung cancer and you can find out more in there about treatment for lung cancer. On our page on the types of surgery for lung cancer, you can read more on the pneumonectomy and we also have in-depth information on chemotherapy for lung cancer , radiotherapy for lung cancer and also on chemoradiotherapy for lung cancer. Make sure you discuss your different options with your oncologist/medical team asking them all the questions that spring to your mind so that you can make an informed decision weighing all the pros and cons for each option. It's difficult to know what to do in your place and I hope that you can talk to someone about this soon or that you will hear from members of our community who have been in a similar position before and had to decide what type of treatment to have.

Feel free also to get in touch with our cancer nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be happy to listen and you are welcome to talk things through with them and get some guidance and support from our nurses.

Whatever you decide, I hope that treatment will go well and that it will be a success.

    Best wishes,
