Short term sick leave around chemo

Hi there,

I’ve already had 6 cycles of EC chemo and now on chemo tablets and back to working 34 hours a week.

I may need to start IV chemo again and am wondering if anyone has experience of having ‘pre-planned’ sick leave around each chemo session? I was off work for 7 months last time but I’m hoping to be well enough with 5-7 days of each session to work again (clerical work from home).

Anyone been able to do something like this?

Thanks

  • Hey Styles,

I'm glad to hear you're back at work and I hope your chemo is going well.

I hope this information I've found about work and cancer will help you figure out what to do, but hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar position when having their cancer treatment will be along soon to offer their thoughts and advice.

If you haven't done so already, it may be worth talking to your manager and/or HR to find out what adjustments can be put in place to make this possible.

You can also have a quick chat about this with one of our nurses on 0808 800 4040. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to help.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Styles,

I hope you're coping OK with treatment and going back to work.  I know it can be tough.

I always had my chemo for breast cancer on a Tuesday every three weeks so I was self-reporting sick absence on my employer's HR system for Tuesday-Friday and then back to work on Monday working from home.  It worked well for me.  I found that I could do work that was very familiar to me, but I couldn't do any cognitively demanding tasks, like learn complex new information or multitask.  Saying that, my brain never went back to what it could do before the cancer treatment.

    I hope that helps!x

  • Thank you so much - that is very helpful!

My chemo was on a Wednesday before so that could work.
