Driving: my son has cancer and has been told he will probably never be allowed to drive again.

My son age 41 has recently been diagnosed with cancer. He has lung cancer, abnormal lymph nodes and a metastatic deposit in the brain. Yesterday his consultant told him to inform dvla and that he will probably never be allowed to drive again.

he is completely devastated by this. He is a hgv technician, he is divorced with two small children he has frequent contact with. Driving is everything to him and the thought that he may never get behind the wheel again has floored him more than the cancer diagnosis.

ive checked the dvla website and it appears he may be able to drive after two years

can anyone help us here, has anyone got their licence back?

  • Hello Pootocancer,

I am very sorry to hear about your son's cancer diagnosis at such a young age and it must be so deeply upsetting for him not to be able to drive again especially if it's something he enjoys doing. It's so sad and I hope this will only be temporary but I think it's important to follow your consultant's advice if they believe that the cancer will affect his ability to drive. There is useful information on our website on cancer and driving and I would also highly recommend you have a look at the cancer and driving section on the government website

It might be worth getting in touch with his consultant to clarify how long he won't be able to drive for - or you could also seek the opinion of another consultant just to make sure.  Mention what you have seen on the DVLA website but ultimately, the medical experts will be in the best position to assess whether your son will be able to drive again as they will know all the details of his condition and how it might affect driving. It's really sad though that he might have to stop doing something he enjoys so much.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been in a similar position and that they will have some positive stories to share with you based on their personal journeys and experiences.

We're thinking of your son during this challenging time and wanted you to know that you are not alone and you will hopefully meet others here who have been in a similar place before and who will understand how frustrating this must be for your son.

    Best wishes,

  • I do know a number of cancer patients who have had brain mets and have got their licences back after 2 years. This can only happen if treatment has worked and the consultant has been happy for their patient to apply for their licence back.

I think that your son's consultant was giving him the possible worse case scenario but I would never lose hope that his treatment could be successful. Perhaps speaking to a Macmillan or Maggies counsellor might help him (if there is one of these local to him). Good luck x
