When care is not good enough what do you do? We need change.

I have inflammatory breast cancer stage 3 and to be honest my experience of the whole healthcare system has been pretty poor, my oncologist has been in general good but the experience at the hospital for chemo and maintenance, as well as my experience of my nurse has been pretty rubbish.  My oncologist also tried to refer me to the Hospital for a chat about reconstructive surgery and they refused to talk to me based on what I thought my BMI was.  It is bad enough battling cancer let alone battling the healthcare system but I am not someone who finds poor care acceptable, we need to put the care back in care, and for me to basically be told you are too fat for us to talk to was not acceptable for me or for any cancer patient.  To be told we refuse to talk to you because of your BMI and not support you in terms of options for reconstruction based on an unscientific BMI is ridiculous.  I want cancer patients to get better care, better treatment options, and better support, I want the nonsense of BMI referral criteria to stop, have a conversation with the person, meet them, if they want reconstruction support them to lose weight.  Ironically as I had a severe reaction to the chemo my BMI was under their stupid criteria anyway.  So I decided to reach out to all media outlets and the BBC responded and so I was on South East BBC news, the BBC website and also the radio,  the hospital lied about a few things saying they offered to refer me to another hospital and that they offer cancer treatment patients a support package to lose weight and gave no justification, they tried to blame it on my oncologists referral, which I saw and which in no way could they use to justify their inadequate and ridiculous approach.  They also tried to blame the fact that the person on the phone told me to get an implant even though I can't have an implant as I have inflammatory breast cancer, on the fact it was non clinical staff member.  In my experience clinical staff are no better and sometimes far worse than non clinical staff, but essentially you need to read the referral letter properly before you call people and talk nonsense.  From a hospital this was not acceptable and so I called out for change of this shoddy service so no other cancer patient has to suffer from this type of treatment at a time when they are most vulnerable.  I am lucky I can advocate for myself, that I am an outspoken person that expects a good standard of care and will demand it, but not everyone is so fortunate.  However, if we do not demand change and better treatment how can we expect change from a broken healthcare system that appears to put staff first and patients last.  That said I have now been referred to another hospital to talk about reconstruction options and I feel the experience has so far been a great and person centred service, which we should expect from all healthcare providers.  Healthcare providers need to remember that yes they get paid to do a job, but it should never just be a job it should be a vocation where patients are put at the centre of the service and the quality of care is outstanding and considers patient needs, rather than teams of people making decisions without patient input and treating patients like subhumans.

  • Hi Samroz3,

Thank you for coming here and sharing your experience and I am so sorry to hear that things didn't go so well for you. I can completely understand why you felt this way when you had this conversation about the BMI. It's great you have been so vocal and pro-active and as you probably know there are things you can do if you feel like you have had issues with your care and our website has detailed information on how to complain about healthcare services so don't hesitate if there is anything you would like to flag so that they can learn from your experience and hopefully improve things for patients.

It's great though that you have been referred to another hospital to talk about your reconstruction options and I am pleased that so far the experience has been a good one and the service was people centred so I hope that things are now looking up for you and that you will be looked after very well in this new hospital.

    Best wishes,
