LIVING WITH CML

I was diagnosed with CML in June 2023. I have been really very well once the medication was changed. I've not really had much communication with my GP about my diagnosis.  No real need as I see my consultant at the hospital every 3 months. However, just this week, two weeks after my 70th birthday , I had an online medical review with one of the GPs from my practice.  I have never met or spoken to this particular GP previously.  On a few occasions during the call he said "given your age" and "given your life expectancy "! I came away from the call very upset. Is there something I should have been told?

  • Hello Dolly-,

Thank you for coming here and sharing your story of living with chronic myeloid leukaemia and I am pleased to hear you have been doing so well since the medication was changed and that you have seen the consultant at the hospital on a regular basis. I can completely understand why you felt quite upset following this online medical review with this particular GP you had never spoken to before and who wasn't the most tactful mentioning your age and life expectancy but try if you can not to dwell too much on it as this was clearly just a poor choice of words. Happy belated birthday by the way and bear in mind that you are only 70 years young, you seem to be doing really well and that is the most important thing.

Perhaps you could mention this experience when you next see your consultant and it will be a good opportunity to ask the question as to whether there is anything you need to know in light of what the GP said. Your consultant really is the one who has the most expertise in the field of CML so you can really trust his/her judgement on this. If you feel really upset by what you were told, you also have the right to raise the issue and our website has a wealth of information on making a complaint. But it's good that you get to see your consultant so often and it is a chance to bring anything that concerns you to their attention and get clear and definite answers from the true experts who have been following your cancer journey since June 2023.

I hope this helps and that you will hear from others here who have encountered a similar experience and who have also been diagnosed with CML.

    Best wishes,
