Letrozole and tendonitis

Have seen the oncologist today and he has prescribed me with Letrozole for 5 years which I am about to start tomorrow.

He mentioned some side effects to me but having picked up the medication the leaflet in the box highlights the possibility of tendon pain or swelling. This was not something mentioned at my appointment.

I am worried as I already have tendonitis in my wrist. By working part time I have it under control but I am worried about the affect the medication will have on my existing condition. I can not afford to not be able to work as I have no partner to financally back me up.

Does anyone have experience with this.

    1. No worries, you may get away with it. Like most of us I'm not used to being unwell. I expected to bounce back into action but it's not happening yet. Good luck with the rest of your treatment.
  • Hi Gairloch,

It usually takes 3-4 weeks for the effects of Letrozole to start kicking in, so 2 days seems very soon. Here's hoping that the pain settles as your trepidation about taking Letrozole settles down.

Have you looked at the possibility of getting state benefits? These might be of some help, if you cannot work as a result of your cancer treatment. Macmillan can offer advice about this.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Mummymartin,

I can fully understand how you feel about your body image. I don't think that any of us are ever truly the same after a cancer diagnosis. Everything happens so quickly after diagnosis, that we don't feel in charge of our own bodies any longer and we just get swept up into the flow of surgery and treatment, with little time to worry about the emotional aspects of such devastating news. We ae all very aware of self-image and this can also take quite a knock after surgery. I am glad to hear that you plan to see a counsellor - have you got a date for this yet? You will find it helpful to write down in advance how you feel about everything.

Have you considered going to Breast Cancer Now's "Moving Forward" course?  I found it very helpful to talk to others, who also felt like this and have gradually come round to being proud of my battle scars! You have come through a lot in a short space of time and have been so positive throughout - we all have these glitches. I am sure that this positivity will return - just give yourself time.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I have sent a friend request. As you are about 3 weeks ahead of me it would be nice to keep in touch with someone on a similar stage of the journey. Despite having a major wobble at the weekend I want to try and get through this as positively as possible.
