Anxious about loosing my hair

Hello everyone

I was diagnosed on the 7th January 2025 after 4 different appointments and years in different hospitals…

im angry that I wasn’t checked before!!!

Im going to start chemotherapy straight away and the oncologist told me that yes or yes I will loose my hair..I’m not suyog the side effects of chemo but very anxious about loosing my hair…would appreciate any tricks or recommendations of how to deal with the hair loose..thanks in advance & good health to all xx

  • Hi, so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. The diagnosis can feel like such a shock followed by the news of side effects. I think the main thing to do is consider what is right for you. Personally I got a short haircut immediately ( like a short bob) and chose a wig. After my first round of chemo it started falling out so I cut it short. Then after my second I shaved it as more was falling out. I wore “fashion turbans” after this which made me feel good. I never actually wore my wig.
Others I met either shaved their hair immediately and left it as that or cut it short and got a wig. I’ve seen people online go for one final crazy hairstyle they always wanted to try or a wild colour.

It’s certainly a journey and at this point people saying it will grow back feels so far away. It was strangely a relief after my hair fell out as I had been dreading it and then I didn’t have to worry about it anymore.
A lady at the beginning of my treatment told me hair grows back better :) mine is now long, thick and a totally different colour than before. Good luck with your journey and there’s plenty of people on here who can relate and offer advice or a listening ear.

  • Hiya,

If you haven't started chemo yet. 1Ask your chemotherapy team about Scalp Cooking. Do they offer it and is it effective with your type of cancer.

A waterproof cap s placed on your head 30 mins before chemo, connected to a machine that pumps liquid coolant through the cap.

The cap stays on during chemo and up to 90 mins after.

Scalp Cooling helps to reduce/ prevent hair loss.

    Keep fighting x

I myself have been quite well this last week, following a week after chemo when I felt  absolutely ***.

    All the best!

  • Hi I used the scalp cooling cap fir two of my chemo cycles but unfortunately my scslp was exposed on the 3d cycle so they said they couldn't do it anymore? I had 5 cycles of chemo.4 of docetaxel and one of Epirubicin.my hair came out about 2/3 weeks after my  chemo so just be aware if might not happen straightaway.ive got a wig but Been wearing hats.its a visual thing but you get used to it eventually not all drugs you.loose your hair.but I lost quite a bit.
