still going strong - was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2018

Was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2018 and was told that my surgery would leave me with a stoma that couldnt be reversed.  I was very scared and it was a big decision but i decided against surgery.  My consultant tried to persuade me but I said no.  Luckily the oncologist referred me to a hospital in the East Midlands where i was treated with 4 sessions of papillion treatment followed by 5 weeks radiotherapy along with chemo tablets.  At first i had mri ct and colonoscopy tests every 6 months for 2 years then ct and colonoscopies yearly.  This week at my review I was told that I now only have to have a ct scan yearly until 2028.  I do have some side effects and sometimes feel bit scared but on the whole i think it was the right decision for me.  Easy to say but to everyone receiving treatment just try and see the positive and enjoy the good days,

  • Hello Suewell

I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your story. It's great to hear that you're doing so well and that despite the side effects of treatment, it sounds like you're approaching life from a place of positivity.

We often get people post asking about being unsure about the treatment options that they are being offered and uncertain if they are making the right choices for their personal circumstances. Hopefully, your post will offer support and hope to others who find themselves facing a difficult decision in the future.

I wish you continued good health.

    Best wishes,
