Colorectal Cancer diagnosis

Hi all,

So i was recently diagnosed with stage 1/2 colorectal cancer.

I really don't know ow how I'm supposed to feel.  When I have my sons with me, I'm fine, but when I'm alone, I just start thinking things ...

Doctor has said they'll operate soon, as stage 1, and then do the stage 2 surgery a couple of weeks later if needed (the tumour is low, so will end up with colostomy bag).

My emotions are just so up and down, I keep snapping at people when I don't mean to, I'm not eating properly, because I can't be bothered ...

I'm trying to be positive through it all, but it's not easy!

  • Hello Jammah77

I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Although it sounds as if it's been caught early and the team have already discussed a treatment plan with you it's perfectly understandable that you have moments when you feel overwhelmed and struggle with thoughts and emotions. It's a natural part of the process when a big life event such as this happens.

It's natural for our minds to wander in the moments when we're alone. Whilst it's ok to acknowledge those moments and thoughts, try to keep busy as this can help. It's also a good idea to avoid searching the internet for information and answers as what happens most often is that we're left feeling even more worried.

It's important that you try to eat properly to keep yourself fit and well ahead of your surgery. Whilst it's understandable that you may be lacking motivation to prepare or cook food, if you're not eating because of [physical issues such as nausea do talk with your GP for some support in managing this.

We know that for many people this period of waiting for treatment to start can be difficult. If it would help to talk with someone about how you're feeling you're most welcome to give one of our nurses a call. l know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

You might also want to get in touch with your specialist cancer nurse to ask about support groups in your area. I know that many other members have said how they've found it helpful to talk with others who are going through treatment for cancer. If there is a Maggie's in your local area you might want to pop in for a chat with one of their cancer support specialists.

Please know Jammah77 that the Cancer Chat community is here for you as well if it helps to have a safe space to put down in writing how you're feeling and chat with others who understand the rollercoaster of emotions that comes as part of the journey. Post any time if you feel it would help.

I hope that your surgery goes smoothly and that the team are able to do all that they need to in just one operation. Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
