Sleep Anxiety, Depression and cancer

Hi everyone - I posted in the introduction pages initially, but now I've had my bowel resection and am waiting for a call about next steps. Unfortunately, due to all th8s,and a previous history of m tal illness, I'm doubly struggling, due to the fact that I cannot sleep without tablets, and have been told that I need to stop using them. I have now also developed a deep depression as well, so al in all, I'm  currently in a very difficult place - any advice, pointers to support groups etc would be much appreciated - I'm based on the Berkshire area, blessings to you all

  • Hello Walter1

I'm sorry to hear about all that you're dealing with. I hope that you're physically recovering well from the surgery. Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long to hear about the next steps in your care.

You mention in your post that you've had problems with your mental health in the past. Do talk with your GP about the low mood that you're struggling with at the moment. They will be best placed to support you with this and make any appropriate referrals to the mental health team. I'd also really encourage you to talk with your specialist cancer nurse who may be able to help as well.

In the meantime, I wanted to give you the links to two organisations in your area that you may want to explore for support. There is a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre based in Reading. You might also want to consider getting in touch with MIND Berkshire. Hopefully these organisation, along with your GP and cancer care team will be able to help improve things for you.

If you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for advice and support you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
