Hair falling out but I have a Wig. How long will it take until I'm comfortable with it?

I have terminal  cancer and am having some immunotherapy

My hair is falling out and I have got a very nice wig but   How long  will it take before I am comfortable with it?

I feel like I am wearing a furry hat and also feel that I am not myself?

  • Hello Dandydog

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Undoubtedly this is a difficult time for you. It's understandable that as well as learning to cope with everything else that you're having to deal with you're finding wearing a wig to be a strange experience.

For the first few days or weeks, it might feel very strange to wear a wig. Some people never really get used to wearing a wig and feel more comfortable without it. Others say that they forget they have their wig on.

It may be that if your hair continues to thin and fall out the wig feels more naturally comfortable against your scalp as opposed to wearing it over your natural hair. I don't know how often or for how long you've been wearing the wig. Maybe wearing it little and often at home might help you get used to the sensation of wearing it and it becomes to feel like a part of you.

There are no hard and fast rules about wigs. It really is down to what you feel comfortable with and it may be that you decide a wig is not for you. If that is a choice you make in the future then you might want to consider other options such as hats and scarves

If you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to offer any advice and support they can.

I do hope that as time moves on you feel more at ease with the changes you're experiencing. Keep in touch Dandydog and let us know how you're getting on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi, I had a terminal diagnosis and immunotherapy which was really successful in shrinking areas of concern, so I’m praying for success for you. Despite using the cold cap I still needed a wig. I have a very small head, so it had to be so tight for me not to feel worried about it, but I wore one of those skin coloured hair net underneath (like the material tights were made out of) from Amazon. I did wear hats a lot in the summer on top of the wig  just so I didn’t have to think about it, but I wish I’d got a 100% natural one in the end as mine was 60% real hair and I know what you mean it does feel like a furry hat, but I did find people responded to me better when I had it on and treated me more like the ‘old me’ rather than the ‘ill me’…hairclips, hats and hairbands also helped it feel like the wig belonged to me a bit more. I did abandon the wig once my hair growth covered my scalp and my husband was pleased to see the wig go as he was a bit scared of it!
I do wish you all the best with your treatment- don’t give up hope x
