Hi I am just about to start radiotherapy on my nasopharynx and bilateral nodes.
Does anyone know when I can expect symptoms from radiotherapy to start and how long after treatment they usually last for.

Hi Nicole
Radiotherapy to your head takes quite a bit of getting through, having support from a loved one or a friend will help you greatly.
If you are driving to your appointments, the first few weeks will be OK, then you'll need someone to drive you or get a taxi or bus.
The treatment and the constant journeys can make you very tired, so be sure to allow time for your body to rest.
There will be times when you want to give up, but persevere with it and see it through to the end. The reward is worth it.
If you have contact with a McMillan nurse don't hesitate to ask for support.
When symptoms start varies from person to person. This is my experience.
if you are having 20 daily sessions 5 per week over 4 weeks weeks.
Week 3 the effects start to become very apparent, mention any unpleasant side effects to your team, they will know how to alleviate them.
Week 4 and the week / 10 days after the treatment ends are the worst, then the worst of the symptoms subside quite quickly, then it takes months to fully recover, but you will get there.
Follow all the instructions your radiotherapy team give you for your post treatment phase. This is most important.
Best wishes for your upcoming treatment and road to recovery.

Thank you. That's very helpful. I think I am having 7 weeks of radio daily
Hi Nicole, there's a head and neck cancer forum on the Macmillan website too. Very supportive people who have been through it all.
Oh that's good to know. I'll check it out. Thank you.
