Help: cancer loneliness

Do everyone feel lonely with cancer

  • I did, more to do with lack of support and understanding. I was fortunate to meet cancer research staff at my local medical centre and a cancer transport charity that took me and other patients to appointments. My advice is to reach out to the cancer charities out there, they really do help.

  • I to feel lonely have only got my son as support

  • Hi Sarah,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Can I ask what type of cancer you have? I am 14 years down the line, after 2 bouts of breast cancer within a year of each other. I did feel very lonely at the start of my cancer journey. As Magpiemaggie pointed out, much of this was to do  with lack of support and understanding. I attended a number of courses post-surgery and I also visited some of my local cancer centres, like Maggies and The Haven. I got tremendous help and information from these sources and would certainly advise you to reach out to such centres. I also found this website, where you can talk to others, who have undergone treatment ,or are still going through it. I feel that the experience and advice I have received here has been invaluable. Have you attended any of Breast Caner Now's courses - they do a great one on Moving Forward.

It took me some time to feel less lonely and afraid, but I did eventually get there.  Now that you have found this forum, you need never feel lonely again. This is a haven, that you can visit at any time of day or night and you can talk about virtually anything. There will always be someone here to chat to, who truly understands what you are going through.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • That's really sad, family dynamics can be difficult. Please contact the charities mentioned, you will meet many people who are in the same situation and they will support you. I don't know where you live but in scotland, MacMillan have a room in all our libraries were anyone can pop in for a chat and some tea and biscuits. The charity also provides therapies like messages, reflexology etc. I really looked forward to those sessions

The onus is on you to reach out, you've taken the first step by posting on here, next is finding out what's in your area. Your cancer team should be able to give you all that information.

    Sending hugs x
