Is this normal?

So in a nutshell I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer last year and had Radiotherapy at the start of Christmas, because of the type of Cancer I had I am in a medical menopause.

i have dealt with everything surprisingly very very well indeed. The last few weeks I just feel, well, on a complete downer. No energy, can’t be arsed doing anything and I honestly don’t know if I’m depressed or just lazy? Has anyone hit a hugh low after doing so so well?

  • Hello Legav

I'm sorry to hear that you've been through treatment for breast cancer within the past year. It's great to hear that you dealt with things surprisingly well at the time but I wanted to reply to your post to try and offer some reassurance that what you're now feeling is not uncommon. In fact, I've read many, many posts on this forum over the years from others who have found themselves in a real slump some months after active treatment has finished. So please be reassured that you're not alone and this is not unusual.

It is possible that your medical menopause is contributing to how you're feeling but it's important to remember that your body, and your mind - even if it coped well at the time - have been a real rollercoaster of a journey since diagnosis. Often low mood and fatigue only sets in well after treatment has ended.

I'd certainly suggest talking with your GP and breast care nurse if you still have contact with one. If you have a Maggies in your local area it's worth maybe popping in to chat with one of their cancer support specialists. Or perhaps you might want to look into the Moving Forward course that Breast Cancer Now runs.

We have some information about cancer and mental health on our website and I know that many members have found it helpful to talk things through with one of our team of nurses. If you think this may help then you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

You've made the first step in reaching out for support Legav and I'm hopeful that with some help from those around you, things will improve over the coming weeks and months.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
