Prostate cancer that has spread

Hi, my Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February it has spread to his bones in his pelvis and the clivall bone in his head, he is on hormone tablets and injections but he also had five sessions of radiotherapy about 5 weeks ago.  He is now feeling very sick all the time and is not eating, he sleeps most of the day and is very weak.  Could this be the radiotherapy or is it more likely the cancer has spread?  He has had more scans today.  He is 77.

  • Hello Cookie

I'm sorry to hear that your Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer that had spread to his bones earlier this year. It's understandable that this may have been a difficult time for you all.

Radiotherapy side effects can continue to get worse for a few weeks after treatment ends. It's good to hear that he has had more scans earlier this week and hopefully, they will offer some reassurance but don't be afraid to contact his GP, Consultant or clinical nurse specialist if these symptoms haven't improved. There should be options that can be offered to help better manage his nausea and lack of appetite. Hopefully, if your Dad is able to increase his food intake this will give him more energy and help him feel a little better.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope things settle and improve for your Dad soon.

    Best wishes,
