Diagnosed with two breast cancers

Hi

i was diagnosed with oestrogen positive breast cancer in 2015 and underwent a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy and Tamoxifen and sent on my way. My lymph nodes were also clear so all in all a good result and I carried on with my life.
Then in 2020 I was diagnosed with secondary as cancer had spread to my spine, so now undergoing quarterly scans and monthly bloods. Now take Anastrozole and Abemaciclib.

in June this year I was diagnosed with TNBC in my other breast and have just undergone a lumpectomy and a sentinel clearance as all nodes looked suspicious.

Following my appointment today with my surgeon I am now concerned and they said very little but I came away thinking that because I am classified as Stage 4 my treatment plan will be very different than if I was a primary patient.

I understand this as I can not be cured so chemo may not be worth it when it’s weighed up with the after effects.  However, I can’t find any info on this so was hoping there was someone else who may be dealing with this or have experience of a similar situation.  I have my appointment with my consultant next week following my CT scan and I don’t know what to ask them.

My surgeon said that if there was any spread biopsies would be needed as they will not know what cancer is the cause but said this is a more aggressive cancer that spreads to the organs.

I guess I may  now have secondary cancer fRon two different types of primary cancer, so feeling a little shell shocked at the moment.

  • Hi Sunflower,

Welcome back, although I am so sorry to hear what has happened to you, since you were first diagnosed.

As you already know, this early stage of diagnosis, where you don't know the full story, is always very stressful. I am no doctor, but I understand that there are some chemo treatments which can be used for stage 4 breast cancer. Immunosuppressants can also be used. I expect that you are more of a challenge, with different types of cancer, but there are a number of people in a similar position to yourself, so this will not be unusual for your consultant. We have a number of people on the forum who have stage 4 and I hope that some of them will be along to chat with you soon.

I hope that you are recovering well following your surgery and that you get more answers soon. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
