Colorectal Cancer/Alcoholism

My son was diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer in June last year he is 44 years old. Unfortunately he also suffers with alcoholism he was dependant.

He was told he would have to have rehab as his liver pressures were not good. He would then have operation to remove tumour as had not spread and would then go into Liver unit to recover

Unfortunately he was not admitted for rehab till March this year. He then was told they needed about 6 weeks before they could consider operation. After another portal pressures test he has been told that they cannot operate because of his liver as he would die on operating table and he cannot have chemo treatment either. They have dismissed his care and said he can get palliative care from GP.

This has all been a big shock as we were led to believe it is operable and now a year on they have said not because his liver won't cope.

He did have a stent fitted last year to hold the tumour in place. They have suggested they could fit another if needed.

  • Hi SSimon,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm very sorry to hear of the situation with your son - this sounds like a lot to process, especially if the plans have changed somewhat.

If you have questions about what the doctors are saying, do raise these in order to get the information and understanding you need. It's also possible you could ask for a second opinion if you feel this could be helpful.

If you'd like to talk things through with someone, our nurses are available on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,
