Positive lymph nodes and second surgery

Hi all,

I had a lumpectomy three weeks ago and had my results appointment on Wednesday. Turns out the lower margin wasn't clear and so I need more surgery. The consultant has recommended another attempt at lumpectomy, but what is worrying me most is that two of my lymph nodes were positive. I just feel completely terrified as the first thing people always say is, it's not in your nodes is it??? I think I just automatically assumed lymph involvement is BAD. Anyway I kind of feel like the results appointment was worse than actually being told I had cancer...can positive lymph nodes be cured? My consultant said he won't remove more nodes because I'm only 47 and the risk of complications is high, so they're going to be treated with radiotherapy. Does anyone have any experience of this?

Many thanks

Sharon

  • Hi Sharon. I'm 46 and had a lumpectomy and my lymph nodes were positive too. Different trusts do different things, so my lymph nodes were all removed in second operation as well as a cavity shave. Had a third op too as needed another cavity shave. In total I had 3 ops. I have 2 out of 16 positive nodes. I am starting chemo soon and then I'll have radiotherapy. Leaving my lymph nodes in wasn't even discussed. They said without removing them they wouldn't know how many were affected. Hope you are okay. Speak to your BCN and discuss your worries. They will help you. Good luck xcc
