Pleural effusion

My dad was diagnosed with Metastatic lung Ca. He is scheduled for 4 cycles of chemo/immunotherapy and has only had one (should have had 2 by now) because he just keeps getting raging temperatures and his infection markers are really high. Turns out he has 2 litres of fluid on his lung (the cancer side). They are saying they don’t think that’s the cause of the temperatures despite sending blood cultures x2, sputum samples, urine which all come back as negative. I can only think the pleural effusion is the cause (they say it’s like malignant fluid not infective).
Anyway they drained the fluid today, just praying my dad turns a corner and the temperatures/infection markers settle enough for him to proceed with his treatment again.

Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Hello lauraj87

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis and that he's been too unwell to continue with treatment. It's understandable that you're worried about him.

how has he been since the fluid was drained earlier this week? I hope that he's feeling more comfortable and that the team has been able to get to the bottom of the cause of the symptoms you've described.

If you want to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can.
