Finished my chemo on 2nd May - Hair is starting to grow but sore scalp

Hi all

Finished my chemo on 2nd May and lost all of my hair, eyelashes and eybrows during treatment.

My hair is starting to grow (well some fluffy bits) but my scalp is really sore. I am washing it every other day with Simple shampoo and conditioner. Afterwards I gently rub on some rosemary oil (read that it promotes growth)

Has anyone else suffered from this? If so, any help would be appreciated

Also, how long does it take for the hair to grow back?

My eyebrows are also starting to grow back but unfortunately not my eyelashes. Any advice of this too if you have any.

Thank you x

  • Hello Cah60,

Well done for finishing your chemotherapy on the 2nd May - that is a huge milestone and you can now focus again on rebuilding yourself and seeing the hair, eyelashes and eyebrows you lost during treatment gradually start to grow back again. It's great that your hair is starting to grow again already and I am sorry to hear that your scalp is still very sensitive and I hope that you will get some good tips from other members of our community who've been through all this before and who know how frustrating it can be when once treatment is over, your hair, eyebrows and eyelashes seem to take longer to get back to normal.

Have a look at the general information on our website on hair loss, hair thinning and cancer drugs which examines what happens when your hair grows back and it mentions that after chemotherapy "it may take several months for your hair to grow back" so it's still early days for you as you only finished treatment early May. You will find there some tips to help you protect your scalp as well as on our page on coping with hair loss and thinning.

I thought I would also mention our Cancer Care Collection and in particular the hair and scalp range in case there is anything there that could help you. I've noticed they have scalp friendly shampoo and conditioner, scalp cream and a scalp balm for example. If your scalp soreness doesn't improve it might be worth talking to your GP about it and seeing whether they might have some helpful suggestions for you.

It's great that your eyebrows are starting to grow back and I hope that your eyelashes will be doing the same soon - in the meantime, we have information on our website on how to define your eyelashes which might be of interest to you.

As there's nothing quite like hearing from personal experiences, I will now let other members share their hair growth journey with you - they will be able to tell you how long it took for their hair to grow back and how hair growth happened for them. It can be a long process so hang in there and fingers crossed it all grows back very soon!

    Best wishes,

  • Hiya Cah60.  I also suffered with a sore scalp after chemo.   I bought some 'Child's Farm' shampoo from Amazon which I found helped a lot.  I didn't use any conditioner.  It took about 4 months for my hair, eyebrows and eyelashes to grow back.

  • Hi Blue-girl, thank you for your reply. I have not heard of Child's Farm products before so will give that a try.
