Effect of TRAM on core muscles?

I’m considering having an abdominal TRAM / partial TRAM breast reconstruction (I’m probably not suitable for a DIEP). However I’m worried that the op will seriously weaken my abdominal muscles. Has anyone got any experience of this?  In particular, will it affect how I ride a bike?  (I’m a keen racing cyclist).

  • Hello LindaN,

A keen racing cyclist? That's wonderful! Great exercise and plenty of fresh air and I can understand why you are worried about how the TRAM might affect your core muscles if cycling is something you very much enjoy. You will find on our page on breast reconstruction using body tissue information on using a flap from your abdomen (TRAM flap) and what happens after the TRAM flap and possible complications that may arise and one of the complications that is mentioned there is that "the abdominal muscle can be weaker" and that  "surgeons usually fix a piece of mesh in place during the operation to help strengthen the abdominal wall" but this is something you need to discuss I think with your surgeon prior to the operation. Make sure you mention that you are a keen cyclist and how important it is for you that the procedure won't affect your abdominal muscles. It's worth thinking carefully about your different options and finding the one that will not affect your quality of life too drastically. Get in touch with your specialist before you go ahead with the reconstruction so that you are clearly informed about your options and fully know what to expect with the TRAM breast reconstruction.

We also have a nurse helpline you can ring for free on 0808 800 4040 - it is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be very happy to answer questions you might have about the TRAM so don't hesitate to give them a call to talk things through with someone.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have had or considered TRAM before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

It's a difficult decision to have to make and I hope that you will find the perfect solution that works best for you. Enjoy all your cycling in the nicer weather!

    Best wishes,

  • Many thanks for this Lucy!  The surgeon and my local breast care nurses (I’m in Newcastle upon Tyne) haven’t had people ask this particular question before re: TRAM / partial TRAM, so if anyone does have any experience of it it would be fantastic to hear from them.
