Basal Cell Carcinoma recurrence

Hi, this is my first post.  I had a successful removal of Basal Cell Carcinoma back in May 2024.  I have noticed since the beginning of June 2024 a new freckle that appears to be getting bigger, very close to my incision site.  I will of course contact the doctor however I was wondering if a recurrence could happen so quickly in anyones expeirence as my relaxed mind after removal is now in overdrive once again. Thank you

  • Hi Lou-G,

Yes, a recurrence can happen at any time. Basal cell is usually caused by UV exposure in your past - if you have already been diagnosed with one BCC your skin has suffered UV damage so another BCC can pop up at any time. My dad had a BCC on his forehead & then, shortly after, another beside his eye. My sister-in-law had one on her back & then shortly after, another on her cheek. Also, after a diagnosis you are more conscious of checking your skin & you notice abnormalities much quicker before they've grown & become more obvious. Of course, it may turn out to be a benign freckle but you are right to have it checked out asap.

Good luck & I hope you are referred & treated quickly,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

    Hi Angie

Thank you for your reply.  So it seems it can be common to reccur, I am definitely much more aware of my skin now and constantly feel on the lookout for any worrisome areas. I have contacted my dermatologist and left a message as it is so soon from the removal I will hopefully hear something soon.  Thank you I can't fault the speed of the GP and dermatology team from my initial appointment so I am hoping it will not be too long again in this case.  Wishing you all the best Angie
