Mastectomy due next month. Does anyone have any advice?

Hi there just an update on my progress since my last post. Have been diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in nearly five years. This time in different breast. Have had PET CT and MRI scans. Saw the Consultant two days ago and the tumour is much bigger than first thought so instead of lumpectomy am now booked for a mastectomy next month. At least I am HER2 negative. He mentioned about Oncotype DX testing which might mean chemotherapy afterwards.

Has anyone got any advice or experienced this? I feel happier now I have a plan in place but also concerned that chemotherapy might still be needed after my op x

  • I noticed your post hasn't received a reply yet, so I just wanted to stop by and say hello, MaryT19.

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Facing breast cancer again must be incredibly tough, especially with the changes in your treatment plan. It's good to hear that you feel more at ease having a plan in place, since having some clarity can make a big difference in managing the anxiety and uncertainty.

Hopefully, others who have had similar experiences will come along shortly to offer some insight and advice. Alternatively, if you feel like asking some questions to our team of nurses, they'd be happy to chat with you Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this freephone 0808 800 4040.

Wishing you strength and continued positivity as you navigate this time,

  • Thanks Renata. Will see my Consultant on Monday to go through the operation and for measurements to be taken. Have a few questions for him and also for the specialist nurse.

    Thank you once again
