Medical oncologist appointment for possible chemo

I would like some advice please about an upcoming appointment with a medical oncologist.

Bit of backstory - I had a large ovarian cyst removed in Nov 2023, which was then found to be a rare ovarian cancer (granulosa cell tumour). During that surgery the cyst burst so was staged as 1C.

In Feb 2024 I had a total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophrectomy. Had follow up this week, and although they found remaining GCT in one ovary, everything else was clear.

I was expecting to then move to monitoring. However, the consultant has said they've discussed my case at the MDT again and now think there may be a place for chemo and/or hormone therapy because of the spillage in the first surgery.

I've got an appointment with the medical oncologist later this week, and want to be as prepared as possible.

What can I expect to happen at this appointment? Will it just be talking through options, or are there likely to be any tests/checks too?

What sort of questions should I be asking about any proposed treatment?

Thank you x

  • Also, I know there will be variation in this, but if I do end up having chemo, generally how long is it between the initial consultation and actually beginning treatment? Just trying to get my head around possible time frames. x

  • Hi Sunflowegirl23, sorry to hear you are having to go through this journey. I think time frames probably vary for everyone. I went to the breast clinic on 11th January and got diagnosed with breast cancer on the 18th. After various tests, I saw the oncologist on the 14th February. I did not have any procedures at this appointment, just a breast examination. They talked through my treatment plan and discussed possible side effects. I also met a macmillan nurse, who was very reassuring. She gave me a contact number to call any time I was worried or had any questions, which I have definitely made use of. I have my 3rd cycle of chemo later today, so far I've had minimal side effects, apart from losing my hair. I don't think all chemo causes hair loss, so this might not happen to you. I would suggest you write down any questions you have, as you could forget on the day. It is also helpful to bring someone with you if possible, as it's a lot of info to take in. I wish you well moving forward. Xx

  • Hi Pippin24, thanks for your reply. It's good to hear you haven't had too many side effects. Fingers crossed it stays that way for you xx

  • Thank you. Hopefully, you will make contact with people on this forum, who are on a similar journey as you. I have been chatting loads to a lovely group of ladies on a similar path as myself. It has been really helpful to talk to each and share our experiences. Xx
