Catastrophising: I find my regular scans very difficult

I am a secondary lymphatic cancer patient, following two previous diagnosis, operations and chemo for testicular cancer between 2008 and 2019 I was diagnosed with secondary abdominal cancer and underwent major surgery for tumour removal in 2021.

i find my regular scans very difficult during the build up, erratic behaviour, panick attacks and almost convincing myself or at the very least preparing for bad news despite my condition being manageable at present but not curable.

any help or advice appreciated?

  • Hello Ferrers,

You have been through so much since 2008 - you've had surgery and chemotherapy for testicular cancer, secondary abdominal cancer and then again major surgery in 2021. It's a lot to have to deal with for so many years that it is totally understandable that you would find regular scans so difficult - there is always the fear that something will be flagged and the build up to it will inevitably be a very anxious time for you. It's something that so many of our members will be able to relate to and I hope that you will hear from the experiences of others who have felt the same way prior to their scans.

I know it's very hard but try if you can not to anticipate the worst possible news as this will only make your anxiety worse and hopefully the results will not be as you are imagining them to be. It's good that your condition is being managed at present and I hope you are feeling ok. If you wanted to talk to one of our cancer nurses at any point about how you are feeling, don't hesitate to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

But as nothing quite compares to hearing from the experiences of others who know exactly how you are feeling, I will now let our members who have been in a similar place before come and say hello and I am sure they will have some good tips and suggestions for you based on what worked for them to help them overcome this feeling of 'catastrophising' in the lead up to scans or test results. Have you got another scan coming soon?

    Best wishes,
