Moving back to the UK from Spain - Stage 4 Lung and Liver treated with Immunotherapy

Hi all

My father in law (British) is moving back to the UK after living in Spain for 20 years. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung and liver cancer in October 2022 and has been treated with Immunotherapy in Spain and is well and has has only slight increase on Lung cancer in the 15 months since diagnosis.  He is 80 years old and getting frailer which may be the cancer, the treatment or simply the joys of getting older.  We have been told that he will need to start with a GP visit when he arrives in the UK and will then be referred to the local hospital for treatment.

My question to you all is whether you have any information on whether there are any "limits" in terms of age, time since diagnosis etc for offering Immunotherapy - how can I get assurance that he will be offered this treatment on the NHS?    My fear is that the move will be stressful enough and any delay in his regular treatment or indeed not getting offered immunotherapy at all will cause a major impact.

Any advice would be hugely welcome.

Thank you everyone and wishing you all the very best.

Firstly, I'm  sorry to hear about your father-in-law's health challenges. It's understandable to feel concerned about his treatment continuity, especially with the move back to the UK.

The NHS may offer immunotherapy as a treatment option for certain types and stages of cancer, including lung cancer, however, eligibility for treatment can depend on various factors, including age, overall health, specific characteristics of the cancer, and NHS guidelines.

To ensure your father-in-law receives the appropriate care, it might be a good idea to prioritise communication with his new GP and specialists. They will assess his condition and treatment history to determine the most suitable course of action. Also, it might be helpful to gather all relevant medical records and documentation from his healthcare providers in Spain to facilitate this process.

Hopefully other who have gone through a similar transition will be along shortly to share more helpful advice with you. That being said, if you feel like asking some questions to our team of nurses, they'd be happy to talk things over with you Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,
