Palliative chemo

Hello, can anyone offer any advice?

I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer on 2021, several operations and chemo showed NED for 2.5 years. Following my 6 monthly scans in feb this year, it has shown 3 cancerous lymph nodes in different areas. Surgeons say not operable and referral for palliative chemo. My head is all over the place and am I right in thinking this is now end of life or will this be treatable not curable? And how long would they treat?  I’m so well so it is hard to understand that I may not have long

I'msorry to read about your recent diagnosis. It's understandable that you're feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about what lies ahead and while it's a challenging situation, it's important to remember that every story is unique, and treatment options and outcomes can vary.

As you asked about palliative chemo I thought of this page from our website which covers palliative treatment for cancer if you feel like having a read.

In the meantime, if speaking to someone with a medical background could help, please know our team of nurses are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this freephone 0808 800 4040.

Remember, it's okay to have a range of emotions and uncertainties during this process. Take things one step at a time, focus on what brings you comfort and joy, and ensure you're receiving the support and care you need.

  • Hi Pb,

So sorry to read your news, you must be gutted after being NSD for so long - anyone would be.

A lot of people get confused and worried about what palliative care means.

End of life treatment is a type of palliative care but not all palliative care is end of life care.

Palliative care is treatment aimed at controlling the symptoms, curative care, means treatment aimed at curing a condition.

Only your care team can answer questions about your prognosis and how long treatment will be maintained but even they can only quote statistical averages and none of us are truly average.

The fact you’re feeling so well has got to be a positive factor.

    Good luck
    Dave
