Preventing Neuropathy with cold gloves and socks?

Hi all, I'm starting ECT chemo in a couple of weeks and finishing putting my chemo bag together.  Has anyone successfully used the freezer pack/gloves/socks during chemo to prevent neuropathy? I'm not sure whether to buy them or not and before I did I hope someone on here has had experience of using these. I've decided against cold capping so I think I could tolerate the cold if it helps my hands and feet.

Also, can anyone have a look at my list and see if I've forgotten anything:

Softest blanket ever, E45 cream, my beloved Kindle with Audible and headphones, snacks, water bottle, wet wipes, antiseptic wipes, Gengigel mouth wash/dry mouth spray, puzzle book, notebook and pen, ginger tea bags, anti nausea wristbands, Anbesol

I'm preparing for the worse and hoping for the best!

thanks Liz

  • Hi Misha. Most folk get neuropathy in their feet and hands but, for  the vast majority, it goes away of its own accord within 6 to 18 months. If they give you exercises for your feet and hands, make sure that you do them to keep the nerve endings active.

My surgery came before the chemo, the other way round to yours.

Let us know on here, how things go. We will be thinking of you.

  • thanks Frank,

    I really appreciate the advice

  • Hi I have use the cold gloves and socks for my first 2 rounds of chemo. The hospital provided them for me. It was a bit painful particularly the fingers but the neuropathy since has been minimal so hopefully it is helping.

  • Hi Purplesquare. Many thanks for joining the discussion. It is very interesting to hear that your hospital provided the cold socks and gloves and that your neuropathy has ben minimal so far. I hope it remains like that and that any residual pain quickly disappears after your treatment has finished. Please keep us updated on here.

Where are you based? Presumably in the UK. Yours would be the first UK hospital that I have heard of offering this. If I may ask, what type of cancer do you have?

I hope your treatment passes quickly and successfully. Please keep us updated.

    Regards - Frank

  • Just to post an update on my own situation, I am now on prescription cannabis to try and help cope with the pain. Still at the stage of trying to find an appropriate strength that is effective. It will not get rid of the pain but should make me care less about it if you know what I mean.

Has this been suggested for anyone?
