Stage 3 rectal cancer

Hi

My partner was diagnosed with rectal cancer in June 23. He had 5 weeks of chemo pills and radiotherapy as the doctor felt the cancer was very close to the bladder wall so wanted to try and shrink it before removing. Thankfully this worked and the cancer was removed earlier this year. However they class him as having Stage 3 due to finding possible traces in just 1 lymph node. He is due to start intravenous chemo with pills every 3 weeks for 3 months, at which point they will re-scan to see if that's all that's needed or to undergo a further 3 months.

This stage 3 diagnosis came as a bit of a shock as when the surgeon spoke to us following the op and the results from the samples removed,  we thought this round of chemo was precautionary.

I just wondered if anyone else had gone through this and what happened next? Trying to stay positive but this has been such a hard journey and we thought pre-op, we could see light at the end of the tunnel.

  • Hello CF69 and welcome to the forum.

So many of our members know how tough this journey can be, especially when you thought you were nearing the end only to find out further treatment is needed.

I do hope you hear back from some of our members soon but if you'd like to discuss any of this with one of our cancer nurses, you can do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very supportive and will do all they can to address any other questions or concerns you may have at this time.

We're here for CF69 and wishing your partner all the best with his next course of chemo.

    Best wishes to you both,
