Nasal congestion after radiotherapy nasal septum

I have completed radiotherapy treatment 2 weeks ago for mucosal melanoma of the nasal cavity.I had surgery before this - the tumour was 3.5mm x 1mm thick but there may have been some melanoma in situ. The radiotherapy was awful and have had lots of side effects including nausea, extreme tiredness, watery and blurry eyes. I am having a problem with nasal congestion - it comes and goes but is really terrible at night. I am doing nasal rinses several times a day, steam  inhalations. Is there anything else I can’t do and will it improve?

  • Hello Janwes23

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with some side effects of treatment at the moment. It sounds like it's been a really difficult time for you.

I wanted to let you know about this thread where lots of members who have been through treatment for head and neck cancers have posted and shared their experiences with each other. Hopefully, you may find some tips for coping in some of the posts there.

Often side effects can continue to get worse for a short while after radiotherapy ends so do speak with your Consultant or clinical nurse specialist for advice on managing things as well. They may be able to make some suggestions to help improve things.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope things begin to improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,
